OVERVIEW

Welcome to the Me-Verse!

The Origin Story

Dear Agent,

First, the TL;DR 2-minute short version, in which you get to enjoy my mad rapping skills: :)

Dear Agent, (longer)

Hi! I'm Austin! When I was a kid, I had an incredible dream. "What if," I thought, "I could achieve World Peace—just by being Me?" There was just one problem. I didn't know who I was exactly. I lived on a big green hill with my great big family. And all of my friends—(I promise they're not imaginary.) Every day, I did the same old thing. Write in my diary, in my little white room, imagining.......but you probably know that already, since you've read my query.

I'd like to tell you the true story, the "real" story.

(Which is what you've been reading.)

Growing up, I dreamed of going on a big adventure. My Mom read me stories of great heroes from mythology. My Dad told me stories of when he used to work for Disney. School was too easy, and too hard. Math was SOOO boring. My Mom and Dad took me to the doctor, who said I was "gifted." They gave me a box of "special paints," shortly after my 6th birthday. My favorite times were when I got to go on The Amazing Writing Machine, and come up with all sorts of stories and characters. I brought them home with me every day. I created an evil supervillain called Dr. Diabolocus. I got a sheep—Lucky was his name. I didn't know what I wanted to be when I grew up—I wanted to be EVERYTHING—maybe a paleontologist or a teacher or maybe even an artist or an Author! someday.

I always felt different. While other kids were out playing, I would stay inside and ask for Math Wrap-Ups, Brain Quest cards, Critical Thinking workbooks, Reading Galaxy, Sim City, Civilization, and encyclopedias. In 3rd grade when we went to the rainforest, and 4th grade rode on Pilgrim ships, and I dreamed of sailing out across the seven seas like Christopher Colombus (before I knew what that meant), it felt like I was part of some greater story, and I was sailing out there with him. I rang the Liberty Bell in 5th grade, and felt freedom ring with the patriots, and in 6th grade, when my class's dreams of visiting one of the world's greatest theme parks and roller coasters got derailed by 9/11, we took a wild cross-country road trip back home, and I'm pretty sure my best friend bled from his ears after eating a whole chili at a Tex-Mex restaurant, and I saw those two planes crashing on TV, and I never knew I was part of something even more ginormous.

When junior high rolled around, I was determined to be a "Cool Kid" forevermore. My screenname was "princeofcoolness." That was pretty much ruined when I found out it wasn't cool to get a manicure.

I made friends and turned into a rap star. In 8th grade I performed in my school musical, just like Mom had dreamed of doing on Broadway with, um, a slightly smaller role. It was about a girl named Lola and pineapple pie and friends all across the world and the importance of just saying "Hi."

In high school I became the fastest runner in school history, which was terrific—at least until I became anorexic—at least for the Time Being. Instead of hanging out with friends, during lunch, I would head to the library and read most of the time. The classics, the Norton World Anthologies, filled with so many interesting characters, I would read those books backwards-and-forwards...

College was wonderful, and then the year I was to graduate, I signed up for a daily newsletter. One day, I got a letter from researchers in this tiny isle (known to some as "Paradise," and home to what was once thought to be the tallest mountain in the world, sacred to Hindus, Buddhists, Christians and Muslims alike—and currently struggling with civil war) off the coast of India, saying Dole, the huge banana company, had illegally invaded the jungle, and started running out the critically-endangered elephants. I graduated from college, and then, traveling alongside the BBC, spent 80 days there.

It's there that this story turns.

I'd gone with the goal of "saving the elephants," telling their story, and making my career. When I came back, I tried writing that book. However, when I finished a couple months later, something about it just didn't seem right. (Besides the fact of it only taking a couple of months! lol :)). Something was missing. I kept thinking back to that perfectly rounded sacred green mountain I told you about, which looked just like a child's drawing. And I realized, with its little white shrine on top, it looked like a big green hill with a little white house—the place where I grew up. And I realized that in telling the story of the elephants, I had missed a key part—myself.

I started remembering Everything. My joy. My glee. My complete freedom and happiness and curiosity and creativity I'd had as a child, watching cartoons and drawing, feeling like the world was endless! and I could create and do and imagine anything.

And walking through the paint-splattered aisles of Party City back home, where pictures of popular children's characters were proudly displayed above their party favors (pardon the alliteration, it's just so exciting!), I realized that in order to save the elephants—and achieve world peace—what better way to tell it than through a kid's story?

I got a bowl of birthday cake ice cream. You know, only the best kind of ice cream in the whole entire universe, filled with rainbow sprinkles and ooey gooey chocolatey fudge and brownies. And as I was sitting there, swirling and thinking with my spoon, the sprinkles started looking like different-colored people from all across the world,
green, blue, pink, purple and red and orange and yellow, and they started to look like planets swirling all together in a solar system, in a galaxy, in a universe, in one vast cosmos...

And not just any kid's, but mine
—because I very much was Everybody?

Over the next several years, I tested that theory. I fell in love with kids again, reminding me of what it means to be truly yourself and be free. I went back full circle to school to coach my old (new) cross-country team, taught at Sylvan Learning, and left to start my own teaching company, dedicated to "every little me," and making people happy. I fell in love with their parents, reminding them that they, too, had dreams, and no matter how old you are, you can still be anything. I taught a 3-year-old. I taught a 93-year-old named Jerry. The company evolved. It went from "Running Readers" to "My Story" to simply—well, you're able to read. :)

Because whether you believe in good strict science or god or gods or God with a capital G, or string theory or the Time Beings (never heard of them? huh.) or an as yet-unexplained mystery, no matter how much we may agree or disagree, we can all agree we started from the same thing. Whether we all started from a spark or a quark or quirk of gravity—no one knows exactly what it was—let's just call it a "Me."

We literally made the first stars out of our bodies. And then, when those first stars supernova'd, their bodies, literally, became us.

We became the burning heat of the sun. We traveled through the solar system, past the rocky planets and ice cold giants and landed on the planet that would become us.

Through fire and ice, we were a single strand of DNA, and our stories unraveled. From nothing to something, we evolved. We became plants, algae, sponges, comb jellies (I think it's related to peanut butter & jelly!), starfish, worms, paper nautilus sailing to new worlds, fish with lungs, and we became part of the world's incredible rainbowed handiwork.

We crawled on all fours; we saw the great swamps and rainforests rise up, trees and mushrooms and more—BOOM!

We walked with the Dinosaurs—

BOOM!

We started a monkey school, set off on an epic journey, hewed stone tools, arrived in a Garden. Became human.

I think you get the picture. :)

Our paths diverged. We spread through Africa, out of Africa, across all the continents. We were the ancient Greeks and Romans, the Mesopotamians (that's Ia), the Chinese (that's Yu) and Mesoamericans (Hope) and Hawaiians, we heard the preachings of Wish and Zarathustra and Buddha and Jesus,

we were Muhammad (Peanut Butter Upon Him) traveling down the Silk Road.

I've been born a crown prince and princess, fighting dragons. I've been the court jester, leaving a map for the future. I've been born a sailor, sailing across the seven (or maybe even eight seas), on my Pilgrim Ship, just like Christopher Columbus, searching out buried treasure, found New Worlds, started revolutions, fought in the War to End All Wars, been a piece of my Grandpa Stanley looking up at the World Fair's roller coasters, been an apple in the eye of my Mom and Dad, while she was dreaming of Broadway, and he was touring with Disney—and finally—me.

And, boy! Do I have a story to tell! :) ...And, with the exception of the very end,
that story is YOU. the world's greatest textbook

To think it all begins with fantasy (so you would think), a big-hearted child living on his big green hill, and a wondrous year at an incredible, magical school...

Below you will find a full outline of the story. I have included a detailed outline for the first two months of the story, JOY and AUS. The entire book as described above has been written (though the later months of "Year One" do need editing, as well as the stages to be released several years from now (i.e. Archaean; Jesus!; The Book of Wishes, etc)

As Ava would say, "Let's go on a Big Add-Venture!" :) It's fun being Me, and I can't wait to share that with you. :)

JOY

Hi! I'm Austin! I have a story you probably won't believe. it's the true story of how I achieved World Peace. It's all about Me! Well, actually it's about Everybody! I live on a big green hill with all of my family. (That's Mommy and Daddy and Sandy.) I have lots of friends. (That's Jay Jay and Ava and Lucy and Pele and...) ((I promise they're not imaginary.))

Every day I do the same old thing. Wake up. Write in my diary and create lots of fun cool epic stories. I go searching for my Me. It's the thing that makes me unique. My Mom is so good at everything. She's Mom the Multi. My Dad (I think he's Dad the Dorky) used to work for Dolt Disney or something.

I know I'm not supposed to leave my hill. But I think there's a City: the City of Dreams—where there's so many people I could meet.  We'd throw massive parades. And have parties every day. It would sure be a lot more fun

than playing Bored Games. (I mean, look! It's even in the name!) At least I've got my favorite cartoons on TV.  It's the Power Arrangers edition...hold on wait a second. I think we're receiving an Alien transmission.

BREAKING NEWS appears on the screen. Janet Planet and Gander Galaxy are delivering the lead story—an ancient evil has arisen. It's called—Antius. Nuclear bombs are proliferating. The world's legendary creatures are going extinct. They're calling a global summit. "The Crumple" says the only way to defeat this evil, is for everyone to give him their Me. It's time for bed, but just before we turn off the TV, this mysterious island appears on the screen...it looks like it's still under construction or something...

I can't fall asleep. I sneak outside with Sandy. The celestial spheres revolve  around me...I know I have to do something.

Achieve world peace—by being me!

And my Mom walks in, just as I'm in the middle of my diary.

THE STORY BEGINS...WITH YOU!

YEAR ONE - NEW MOON

The Isle of Skye.jpg

AUS

MOM! DAD!! SANDY!!!

"What are you writing?" Mom asks. "Can I read?"

"No!" I say. "It's my Diary!"

"Hmm." She says. "I suppose that's True. But I don't think there's any rules about you reading it to me, honey."

She convinces me to read. She acts as my editor. "JOE!" She shouts. "You need to see this!" Dad comes running through my Door.

"DOODLEMAN!!!" He says. "Wow!" He zooms in closer. "I look Good!"

We re-tell my story. Sandy comes running in too. We end with a big flash and bursts of ecstasy.

THE GREATEST STORY EVER

Mom and Dad congratulate me on telling such a good story. I imagine myself being famous, flying along with King Kong and Super Diego and my face on Bill's boards. I start the next chapter (well this one really) and write letters to Jimmy Falls On and Opal Winfree. But I hear Mom and Dad talking. "That Imagination he has! Achieving World Peace, by being Yourself!" "What a Story!" And I realize it is just a story—I made it up—and it can't actually happen in Reality.

THE WORST STORY EVER

I head outside to play catch with Sandy. But I threw too far. Sandy disappears below our hill. We go looking for Sandy, but we can't find her, and I don't feel so good.

I wake up in the morning with a temperature. It's really gray and foggy. I don't even feel like watching cartoons. On the news they say the contagion is spreading. I go walk Down in the Doldrums and feel this faint heart beating.

When I return Mom and Dad act funny. We have dinner early. Then all of a sudden these letters start pouring down through the chimney, the Creator inviting me to that mysterious Island I saw on TV—and maybe my Dreams really WILL become Reality—but I notice Mom's handwriting.

I realize maybe Sandy left because she was running away from me. I get ready to make my Great Escape and run away from home but my dandelion parachute stops working. We have dinner and it's raining cats and dogs. My Mom and Dad have to leave to get sandbags. And my Mom says I should try counting sheep to fall asleep. And the next thing I know, it's

THE NEXT MORNING

I wake up to a bright and beautiful sunny day. "Wow!" I shout. "What a Beautiful Day!" I run through the House. It's strangely quiet. There's a note on the Refrigerator from Mom and Dad that says they ran into a little jam. I have the house to myself! But it's kind of lonely. I walk outside with Sandy. But there's no Sandy. It's Partly Cloudy—no, there's lots and LOTS of Clouds—and they're all gathering. One, in fact, seems to be following me. It falls to the ground. I help it up. It says, "Hi! I'm

LUCKY

"Who are you?" I ask.

"Why, I'm your Sheep!"

"Are you a Genie?"
"Have you ever heard of a Fluffy genie?"

Lucky grants me his Wishes Three. The first thing I wish for is Sugary Cereal. The Second thing I wish for is Fruit Salad Pizza. The Third is to find the End of the Rainbow which I always see. We go looking—but it's going off the edge of my Hill—and I'm finally going to have to take a Big Leap.

We land in the Land of Dreams. First we reach the Royal Hills. Then, the peaceful village of Perfect Hoax, where we meet all these characters that I thought were only fantasies. We hitch a ride on Turtle's back to the Fisher of Souls and "Paradise's Potemkin Neighborhoods" and go Sheepherding ("uh oh, Lucky! I don't think I ever stopped counting!") and finally to the Stream where we're playing a fun game of holding-your-breath-until-you-just-can't-breathe underwater and Lucky pops up and puts his hand on me and says, "Austin. I want to hear your Story."

MY STORY

What's the point? I say. It can't really be Reality.

"It can be," he says, "As long as you Believe. Come on. Would I lie? Believe in your Self! Spill out all your Wildest Dreams!"

"OK," I say, "I was thinking...what if there could be a place where you could Learn anything, and Do anything, and be Whoever you want to Be? And what if..." my Heart beats, "...it was just called...Me?"

And I feel my Me release. And I Just start sketching, and drawing, and dreaming of Impossible Things, and this big Theme Park rises up in front of me, and Lucky and me go dancing, and watching the Fireworks, and it's just the Best day EVER! and we finally go to sleep under the stars on the grassy green, and when we wake up in the morning I know I've just gotta show my Mom and Dad what I've made—

But Lucky doesn't want me to go. He just keeps wanting to play. So we play Tag. "You're it!" he says. He runs ahead of me giggling. I see a loose string as we're running. I grab it and he starts unraveling. "Oops!" he trips.

He rises up in front of me. But I see a tongue...these eyes...this hat...it's my Mom and Dad. They were FAKING. This Dream I was having—it was all a lie! I run back up my hill to my house and my room and slam the door behind me, sobbing. I shred up all the pages in my diary and break my art supplies. My parents come in. Dad says they just didn't want me to stop believing in my story. But it's too late for that. Mom says, she understands. And she's sorry. But if I'm ever unsure what to do, I should just say me. I go to sleep. My room is quiet. I'm done with pretending.

THE NEXT MORNING

I wake up with my room nice and quiet. The light is shining through my window. It's nice to not pretend. Time for an ordinary day. I go to the kitchen to have breakfast with Mom and Dad. They have scrambled eggs. I have Blorst. Mom's asking what I want for Lunch. It seems kind of early. She's giving me a bag. I think I have indigestion. My stomach is grumbling. She says why don't you try going to the bathroom. I sit on the Throne and think. And all of a sudden I hear some very LOUD grumbling.

"Honey!" Mom shouts. "Come on! I think it's The Big One Spritz Weather Witch was warning about! It's an Earthquake!!"

I run outside and see something in the mist—it's

E-V

Mom hands me a box of paints. She says, "You know what to do, Honey." A tingle runs through me. I paint a M in front. So now it spells

ME-V - and Good Byes

A big whistle like a train's blows. My postal lady, Iris, is driving the Me-hicle. "All aboard!" She says. "Please take a pair of Rose-Colored Glasses!" I start up the stairs. (Lucky comes with me.) "Well," I say, hanging out on the top stair, to Mom and Dad, who are down on the grass, "What are you waiting for?"

Mom says, "This is your story, honey. You need to find your own me."

Dad sniffs. And then everything pours. "I'm going to miss you, Doodleman!!! Please come home!!! Don't forget to write, OK?!?!?" "Some byes are Gooder than others," Mom says, forgetting her grammar. And I step on board, and we start to soar.

THE FLIGHT

My hill disappears below me. First we bump out low into the Valley. We head into the City, which looks like it's all fixed (but Lucky says, "take off your Rose-Colored Glasses"—and I see it's all burning), and we head over the Shimmering Seas, into the Great Prolific Ocean.

We pass over the Ring of Fire, the Thousand Islands. We cross the Cyclops Mountains, the Sing-Sing Valley, Beige-ing, Mt. May-Rue, the Painted Desert, the Splintered Palace, the Can-Go (people are saying, "Should we save the Rainforest or leave it?" And they're saying, "It's not that important. It can go!") and reaching the Crossroads, where we make a pit stop and these engineers on high balance beams seem to know me, and enter the World Government Headquarters because Iris needs to drop off something, and Grandpa Stanley comes soaring high through the blue sky white clouds in his plane.

"Grandpa!" I say. "Where are you going?

"To fight in World War III!"

"Why?"

"Someone's gotta save the day!"

Iris says we're entering a zone of Unexpected Turbulence. The plane starts shaking. Lucky and I play Rock-Paper-Scissors. He says he won. But I disagree. It's getting all stormy outside. I'm kind of disappointed because I was hoping to see a really cool view of the island as we were approaching. Oh well. I say sorry to Lucky. He says sorry to me.

And the Clouds clear, and the Sunlight shines through, and I see a big green island with a waving banner, that says, WELCOME TO ME.
